Driving Crimes Criminal Defense
HOW TO DEFEND YOURSELF FROM TRAFFIC TICKETS AND DRIVING CRIMES
As a general proposition, you should never make sworn statements in a case in which you are a defendant - as those statements can be used to impeach your credibility and ultimately convict you. However, you can easily fight and likely win a traffic ticket by yourself, without a lawyer, by writing a "trial by declaration." It is often less expensive for you to fight the ticket your than to hire a lawyer (which will cost more than the fine.)
DUIs and Misdemeanor or Felony Driving Crimes Require a Lawyer
While you generally don't need to hire a lawyer for a simple speeding ticket, you will need to hire a lawyer if you are facing a driving crime with serious consequences such as a DUI, or a charge of driving on a suspended license - which is a misdemeanor. If you are driving and you cause substantial property damage or injury to a person then you may be charged with a felony.
